Coronation Street actor Don Hinsliff has died aged 87.

The Leeds born actor who was known for his role as Don Brennan on the cobbles from 1987 to 1997, died earlier this week.

Hinsliff's character Don Brennan was at the centre of one of the soap's biggest iconic storyline, which saw him kidnap Alma Baldwin (played by Amanda Barrie), before driving the car they were travelling into a canal.

While the pair survived, Don then tried to kill Mike Baldwin, Alma's husband at the time, by driving a car at him, which killed himself in the process.

Don Brennan was also married to Ivy Tildsley in the soap (played by Lynne Perrie).

In a sweet tribute to Hinsliff, former co-star Helen Worth who plays Gail Platt, said: "Geoff was a lovely, quiet man who will be sadly missed by us all".

"His partnership with Lynne Perrie (who played his on-screen wife Ivy) was something rather special and they gave the viewers huge pleasure for many years", she added.

Hinsliff's other credits also include: Heartbeat, Doctor Who, The Professionals, and I, Claudius, as well as films O Lucky Man!, and A Bridge Too Far.
