What Is DAB Radio?

DAB marks the evolution from conventional FM radio to digital broadcasting, providing listeners with access to a significantly wider range of radio stations, all delivered in exceptional audio quality.

Since the majority of radio consumption in Ireland occurs via car radios—and with a regulation introduced in 2021 requiring all vehicles to include a DAB radio—this presents an ideal opportunity to expand services through this innovative technology.

In 2025, Ireland’s broadcasting and media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, will implement the Broadcasting Services Strategy. This initiative will establish the framework for radio licensing over the next five years. Findings from this trial—spanning both technical and user-related aspects—are anticipated to support the case for issuing DAB+ operating licences in Ireland during this period.

Where Will DAB Be Broadcast in Ireland?

DAB+ will be broadcast in Ireland on a trial basis and will cover a wide are including Dublin, Louth, Meath, Wicklow, Wexford, Kildare, Westmeath, Offaly and Longford.

The trial will initially consist of a network of 6 transmission sites with high power assignments. The coverage of this initial network will focus on overlapping and synchronous coverage within the Leinster area with a potential to further this coverage to other parts of Ireland within the trial period.

Those in the broadcast coverage area will be able to receive the DAB+ trial with good quality signal on car radios and DAB radio sets.
