Storm Ashley Update From Met Éireann

Rain warnings in effect as Storm Ashley set to bring coastal flooding and strong winds today

Met Éireann  has updated it's weather warnings for Storm Ashley. 

An orange wind warning is NOW in place for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Kerry, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal - until 8pm this evening.  
 

A yellow weather alert is in place nationwide until 3 o'clock tomorrow morning.  
 
National Director for Fire and Emergency Planning Keith Leonard says local authorities are preparing for the worst:

"They're concerned about coastal over topping and coastal flooding, particularly along the west coast and the north west - Donegal down as far as I would say Waterford, but really across all coasts. That's where local authorities are focusing their attention over the next 48 hours"

Meanwhile, drivers are being warning to avoid flooded areas and be mindful of debris on the road today. 

David Martin from the Road Safety Authority outlines the dangers facing road users today:

"Slow Down, allow greater breaking distance between yourself and the vehicle in front and these wet conditions particularly on motorways or dual carriageways, there is always a danger of aquaplaning. Also to take special care when you're driving behind a trucks or goods vehicles as they generate a lot of spray which reduces your visibility - and if the road ahead is flooded choose another route."
