Katy Perry is to receive the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Perry had made her MTV VMAs debut in 2009, when she joined Aerosmith's Joe Perry on stage for a live cover of 'We Will Rock You'. Two years later, she received her first three VMA Awards for her collaboration with Kanye West, 'E.T.', and her hit 'Firework'.

Katy Perry also hosted the awards show in 2017, her last appearance at the VMAs.

The event will see Perry perform a career-spanning medley of songs at the event which takes place at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

The awards ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on September 10, but it was pushed back a day to accommodate the televised presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Other nominees on the night also include Taylor Swift, who has received as many as 10 nominations, one clear of rapper Post Malone.
