Heavy Rain & Thundery Downpours Expected With Temperatures To Drop Below Freezing

Heavy rain and thundery downpours are expected for tonight, leading to spot flooding in some places, as temperatures are to drop below freezing.

With outbreaks of rain and drizzle hitting the country this morning, Met Éireann have said that this rain will become patchier as the day goes on.

Brighter spells are also expected, with temperatures to hit between 11 and 14 degrees, with moderate to fresh and gusty south to southwest winds. These strong and gusty winds are to also spread eastwards across the country tonight, along with "squally heavy rain", according to the national forecaster.

Met Éireann said, "Some thundery downpours are possible, with potential for spot flooding". 

Once the rain clears, things will turn cold, with scattered showers following from the west, with the possibility of rain, hail and sleet. The west and northwest are to see heavy and thundery shows. 

Bright and sunny spells are expected for tomorrow, with many places to remain dry, except for the west and northwest, with highest temperatures to remain between 7 and 9 degrees, dropping to as low as 4 degrees at night.

As for Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy, after a bright start, with patchy rain and drizzle developing in the west and spreading elsewhere later on.

Many coastal areas are to face fresh winds, with patchy rains and clouds, drizzle and mist expected later on. Highest temperatures are to reach between 8 and 10 degrees. Lowest temperatures of 7 and 9 degrees are expected. 

The western counties are get some sunny spells for a time, but cloud and rain outbreaks are predicted for the afternoon, extending south-eastwards later. 

Rain is expected to spread south-eastwards over Ireland on Sunday evening, turning cold in the northwest, with temperatures to hit between 2 and 10 degrees.

Regarding Monday, Met Éireann added, “Generally unsettled conditions persisting with breezy conditions and spells of rain at times".
