Former One Direction star Liam Payne has died aged 31.

The singer died at a hotel in Argentina, according to Buenos Aires police, who released this statement.

"Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo", a spokesperson said.

Payne was part of boyband sensation One Direction, who formed in 2010 following their appearance on British song contest The X Factor. The band also featured then teenagers Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.

The band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, with Payne announcing that he was working on a solo album that same year.
