A majority of people in Ireland believe youth mental health has worsened significantly in recent years, according to a new RED C poll commissioned by Spunout, a youth mental health organisation.

The survey found over 60% think young people’s mental health has declined in the past five years, with rising rates of anxiety and depression.

Social media and cyberbullying were seen as the most significant factors, alongside the housing crisis and the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

Academic stress, including the Leaving Cert, was flagged by over a third of respondents, while others pointed to poor sleep, body image concerns, substance abuse, and a lack of physical exercise. Parental pressure was also cited by 20%.

The findings reflect a growing recognition of the pressures faced by young people and highlight the need for greater support to tackle these challenges.
