Gardai have issued a counterfeit cash warning to consumers.

They say over 700 cases reported between January and October—that figure is an increase from 130 in the same period last year.

To verify euro notes, Gardaí recommend:

• Feeling for the crisp, firm texture of cotton.
• Looking for the watermark and numeral value when held to the light.
• Tilting to reveal the hologram and its value.
• Checking the European Central Bank President’s signature.

The public and businesses are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious notes to Gardaí without using them.
