Construction of the station began in 2019 but progress was heavily delayed by COVID over the past year and a half.
The fire crew is currently based at the old station at St. Theresa's Place and will be transferred as soon as the new station opens.
"It is great to see this project now coming towards completion and I very much look forward to seeing our dedicated fire crew in Kanturk based from there," said North Cork Fine Gael Councillor John Paul O’Shea upon hearing the update from Cork County Council. "The current fire station is located in a very confined site, adjacent to a housing estate which is no longer fit for purpose."
The new station will serve Kanturk, Newmarket and several small villages in the area. The Kanturk Fire Brigade presently serves a catchment area of 15,000 and responds to an average of 100 incidents per year.
"The fire station, when complete and operational, will play a pivotal role in the town of Kanturk and will serve a large number of communities in the surrounding area," said Cllr O'Shea. "This new facility will also assist in encouraging new retained firefighters for Kanturk along with supporting our fantastic existing firefighters."
Funding for the new station is provided by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
