Uisce Éireann is under fire for refusing to attend a public meeting on Cork city's dirty water issue
Local politicians have described the stance as "outrageous" and "beyond insulting"
The utility says it is not available to attend special public meeting next week where the city's ongoing discoloured water problem is being discussed
It comes after the utility announced water restrictions in parts of West Cork following detection of ammonia levels in the River Illen on Wednesday night, triggering a shut-down of the Ballyhilty water treatment plant to ensure that drinking water quality was not compromised.
Fine Gael councillor Shane O’Callaghan says Uisce Eireann's position is “outrageous”.
"If it's a situation whereby the management of a public utility are point blank, refusing to come before the Council or the representatives of the people to answer legitimate questions, then I do think the question should be asked as to whether they should continue in their public role because they have to be accountable to people"
