Emergency services were called to the De Paul Homeless Hostel in Dublin's Little Britain Street, along the north inner city, just after 3pm yesterday afternoon.

The Army bomb disposal team were also called to the scene, where they carried out a post-blast analysis and clearance, including the controlled explosion.

The operation was finished by the early hours of the morning.

The controlled explosion was conducted by the Defence Forces Explosives Ordnance Disposal Experts, on the premises of the hostel. A man aged in his 30s had died following a blast at the hostel. 73 other people lived on the premises, none of whom were injured. They were taken to alternative accommodation for the night.

Residents had reported hearing a loud banging noise, before being evacuated.

A post-mortem is to be carried out by the state pathologist tomorrow.

De Paul which runs the hostel, have stated that the explosion was confined to one room, describing the incident as isolated.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information to come forward, and contact Bridewell Garda Station on 01 6668200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
