The government has previously said that combating domestic violence is a key priority.

However, Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín said the government has been too slow in its investment in supports for victims.

Mr Tóibín said: “One of the big problems that the government has been responsible for is lack of investments in terms of supports for women who have suffered domestic violence.

“We have at least nine counties currently without a domestic violence refuge. While there is some investment going into the system, it is glacial in terms of the speed that is necessary.”

He also pointed to the fact that gardaí responded to 13,000 domestic violence related callouts in 2013, less than a third of the amount so far this year, and said that “Ireland is becoming a more dangerous place.”
