The murdered man has now been named as Charles McCaughey, a pensioner from Donaghmede who was known as "Ollie" to his friends.
At approximately 11pm on the night of June 7th, McCaughey was making his way home along Fairview Strand in Dublin 3. He was attacked and left for dead by a gang. Locals later found McCaughey lying unconscious and called the guards.
McCaughey was immediately brought to Beaumont Hospital for treatment of serious head injuries. He remained in a coma until his passing on June 26th.
On RIP.ie, McCaughey's memorial reads "McCaughley, Charles (Ollie), 26th June 2021, (late of Kilbarrack), (suddenly) in the loving care of the staff of Beaumont Hospital. Ollie will be very sadly missed by his sister Sally, nephews Joseph and Martin, his niece Deirdre, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, neighbours and friends."
As part of ongoing investigations, three men have been arrested to date. All three were subsequently released without charge.
Gardaí have repeated their appeal for anyone who might have witnessed or recorded the incident to come forward.
