The city was rocked by a huge blast on Sunday night as the 10-storey Retroville mall was struck. Firefighters retrieved six bodies from the scene.
Kyiv emergency services said fires broke out on several floors and in the mall's car park. A fitness centre located in the car park was completely destroyed. A crater several meters wide was left in the aftermath of the explosion. Windows in a nearby housing block were shattered by the force of the blast.
Earlier on Sunday a strike on an apartment block left five people injured.
Despite such attacks, Russian forces are struggling to advance on the Ukrainian capital. They have found more success in the port city of Mariupol.
Russian forces offered to allow Ukrainian troops safe passage out of the city if they raised white flags and laid down their arms. The proposal was rejected by Ukraine.
"There can be no talk of any surrender, laying down of arms," said Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk. "We have already informed the Russian side about this."
