While he ruled out taking part in the RTÉ dance competition himself, Mr Varadkar who was speaking from Washington DC, suggested that Justice Minister Helen McEntee would be a good fit for the show.

Mr Varadkar has also implied that a former winner of this show could enter into the world of politics, a list which includes Nina Carberry, Aidan O'Mahony, Jake Carter, Carl Mullan and Mairéad Ronan.

The Taoiseach said, “Even though I will never be entering Dancing With the Stars, don’t underestimate the ability of people who have been winners to enter politics".

On the idea of going on the show himself, Mr Varadkar joked, “Have you ever seen me dance?”.

He added, “That would not be something I would ever consider – balance and coordination would not be my best strengths, unfortunately. So I will never be performing on Dancing with the Stars”.

While he is "sorry to miss the final", Leo Varadkar will travel home from Washington when it airs on Sunday night.

He also said that he is unsure who will win come out on top on Sunday, stating,  “If you'd asked me a few weeks ago, I would have said that was David from Wild Youth, he was doing so well, but Blu has really kind of come up the ranks since then. So I think it's wide open".
