The increase will take effect on December 1st, and the authority says the move will ensure fares continue to reflect rising costs.

The change comes after a review, which takes place every two years.

As part of the review, weekend journeys between peak of hours of midnight and 4am will now be charged at the premium rate that had previously only been charged between 8pm on Christmas Eve and 8am on St Stephen's Day and 8am on New Years Eve to 8am on New Years Day.

The new rate will be charged every Friday night into Saturday morning and Saturday night into Sunday morning. The NTA said the measure has been introduced to encourage more cabbies to service the night time economy.

The fee to pre-book a cab will also raise from €2 to €3. The 9% minimum fare increase has been approved following public consultation on the increase in operating costs experienced by taxi drivers found in the 2024 review. The report found that the costs associated with operating a taxi increased by around 9 to 11% between 2022 and 2024.

CEO of the National Transport Authority Anne Graham said: "The NTA’s review is essential to ensuring the taxi industry remains sustainable and can continue to offer high-quality and reliable services. This 9% increase provides for the increasing operational costs drivers are facing while balancing the needs of the travelling public."

Taxi meters will be adjusted to fit the new fare system over the coming months.
