The theme for this year's 'Reek Sunday' pilgrimage is 'grandparents and the elderly' - with masses taking place from 8AM.

Pilgrims headed for Ireland's holy mountain are also urged to dress for the weather and follow local advice.

The Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick has been undertaken for over 1500 years -  associated with Saint Patrick who's said to have spent forty days and nights fasting on the summit.

However its a physically demanding climb and intending pilgrims should make themselves aware in advance of health and safety information about the mountain.

It's a custom for some to make the climb barefoot, but anyone on the mountain should be prepared for changeable weather, with suitable clothing, good footwear, water and a walking pole or staff.

This year, pilgrims are urged to use the new 'Pilgrim's Path for access - both for safety, and to protect the mountain.

They're also reminded to bring litter home, avoid fouling the mountain streams, and keep their dogs at home.
