The Aslan lead singer passed away following a long battle with illness, having been diagnosed with a rare blood condition known as Amyloidosis back in 2013.

Having been placed under palliative care back in January, Christy Dignam spent the last few months at his home in Finglas being cared for by his family, who confirmed news regarding his death yesterday.

Christy Dignam was survived by his wife Kathryn, daughter Keira and their grandchildren.

Following his death, Dignam's band Aslan paid this moving tribute to the singer on Instagram.

Elsewhere, Tánaiste Micheál Martin paid homage to Dignam, calling him a "true legend of Irish Music".

"A true legend of Irish music, Christy has left a rich legacy. His great talent brought much joy to the Irish people", Mr Martin wrote. "His brave and dignified battle with cancer inspired many. My sympathies to his family and Aslan bandmates".

The world of music also paid tribute to Christy Dignam, including U2's Bono, The Script, Brian Kennedy, Jim Sheridan and more.

Singer Brian Kennedy added, "Ah goodness me how sad….and yet how glad that the cruel cancer journey is finally at an end. What a joy it was to spend any time with you Christy. Sleep the long sleep & rest in the deepest peace. Love to your loved ones. BK x".

Calling the singer one of the greatest voices he ever heard, Bono hailed Dignam as, "A pure signal in a world of noise. One of the greatest voices I ever heard".

Singer Finbarr Furey stated that his "heart is broken" to lose a "great friend".
