49 students have been caught using artificial intelligence to cheat at the University of Galway this year.
Some students have been using ChatGPT to help write their essays
However, the University of Galway is one of the few third level institutions to collect AI cheating data according to a Freedom of Information response.
Professor Barry O'Sullivan, Director at the SFI Centre for Research Training on AI, says the third level sector needs to tackle this issue:
"It isn't sufficient for a student to simply tell you that they are using AI interact academic work because the content itself can be plagiarized so it's really important that there are proper statements and policies in place even at the individual course and module level and to allow students to understand exactly how and when they should be able to use it and in what capacity"
