Speaking at a meeting of Galway City's Joint Policing Committee on Monday, June 21st, Fine Gael Cllr Frank Fahy said dealers are using jet skis to bring drugs into the city via the Corrib River. The dealers are believed to come from areas around Headford and Cong, and are going undetected by using the river.

Fahy asked if the Gardaí have a water unit that could be deployed to tackle the issue.

Responding to the councillor, Chief Superintendent Tom Curley said he was unaware of dealers using the river in such a manner but requested that anyone who had information on the matter should come forward to Gardaí. He told the committee that there was no water unit in Galway City but one could be borrowed from Athlone if required.

The committee was also told that drug seizures in Galway City had risen considerably, up 84% for the first five months of 2021 compared to the same period of 2020.
