Under the Sport Ireland Active Cities programme,
€45,000 will be allocated to Urban Outdoor Adventure Hubs. The funds will be used to develop outdoor areas to cater for sports and physical activities.
The Ballybane Doughiska Community Sports Hub will receive close to €22,000 as part of the investment. It is intended that the hub will act as a centre for clubs and sports organisations within the area. A similar hub will be developed in Ballinasloe.
In a message on Twitter, Senator Aisling Dolan called it "fantastic news," saying the hub would provide "more opportunities to people of all ages in our area to play sports."
The government plans to develop 10 such hubs around the country, funded through Sports Ireland by the most recent round of dormant accounts funding, said to be worth almost €6 million in total.
Such hubs will aim to make it easier for people from disadvantaged communities to engage in sports and physical activities. There will also be a focus on catering for those with disabilities. The hubs will also provide advice, information and support on sports and physical activity options in the locality.
