The funds will be used to upgrade a batch of roads across the county.

Minister Heather Humphreys has secured an extra €10.5 million for the nationwide scheme, taking this year's total investment to €21 million.

"This additional funding demonstrates my commitment to improving connectivity for rural residents – whether it be access to homes, farms or outdoor amenities," said Humphreys.

Galway Senator Seán Kyne welcomed the allocation for the county.

"The LIS allows non-council roads to be upgraded, which are often used by farmers and those accessing local amenities," he said.

Under the terms of the Local Improvement Scheme, local authorities must assume responsibility for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works. This is done in consultation with local residents and landowners. Any works funded by the scheme must be finished by the end of the year.
