Galway City Council have welcomed the Land Development Agency's planned development of 345 new homes in partnership with the Rhattigan Group at the Crown Square Campus. The new A-rated apartments will be made available as cost rental and social housing, with the first apartments to be completed by late 2026.
This is the first such scheme of significant scale in the western capital, following on from plans in Claí Mór, Monivea Road scheme with 28 cost-rental units.
Cost eental is a new form of tenure designed to address affordability and security challenges faced by renters and to provide secure long-term tenancies at rates that are around 25% lower than the local market rate.
These homes are aimed at people on middle incomes who may have difficulty paying rent in private accommodation but who also do not meet the income criteria for social housing support.
Speaking about the announcement, Elizabeth Fanning, Director of Services, said, “Galway City Council welcomes this significant investment in housing for the city, which aligns with our commitment to facilitate delivery of social, affordable, and cost rental homes in Galway. This development will provide much-needed homes for residents, ensuring they have access to high-quality accommodation within easy reach of essential amenities and services. We look forward to our continued collaboration with the LDA and The Rhatigan Group to ensure the successful completion of this project and to continue addressing the housing needs of our city.”
