A 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Defence Forces chaplain Father Paul Murphy, who sustained multiple stab wounds following the attack in Galway last year.

At a brief arraignment at the Central Criminal Court, the teen replied guilty to the count of attempted murder at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa at Renmore Barracks on August 15, 2024.

The defendant was 16 at the time of the attack and cannot be identified.

Mr. Justice Paul McDermott has requested a probation report from Oberstown Detention Centre and adjourned the matter to March 7th for the beginning of the sentencing hearing process.

Fr. Murphy who's aged in his 50's, can then make a victim impact statement to the court.

The victim, a well-liked chaplain with the 1st Infantry Battalion, suffered multiple stab wounds as he sat in his car.

He was treated for his injuries at University Hospital Galway.
