Spice Girls' 1997 hit, 'Spice Up Your Life', has been censored by several radio stations.

The track, which stayed in the Top 20 charts for six weeks following its release, and remained in the Top 40 for 12, has been censored by several radio stations across the UK, including BBC Radio 2, with an amended version of the song being played instead.

'Spice Up Your Life', one of the most recognisable tracks from the group, which includes Mel B, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham, has been censored due to its use of the word, "Yellow".

The song's original lyric read:  “Yellow man in Timbuktu. Colour for both me and you". The amended version of the song sees the word "yellow" removed.

According to a statement shared by BBC Radio 2 representative, this edit was not made by them, but that an amended version of the song was played by several radio stations.

In 2019, controversy over the track first arose, following reports that the Spice Girls had considered replacing the work "yellow", with "happy" for their reunion tour that year. This decision was later thrown out, with the group performing the track with original lyrics.

A censored version of 'Spice Up Your Life' had featured during an episode of Doctor Who in 2023, where characters spoke over the lyrics.

Speaking of the Spice Girls, Mel B recently said that she would jump at the chance at reuniting with the group for another tour. More on this here.
