Surprise! Antrim sisters' perform song for Ed Sheeran

Molly and Ruby Mulholland finished a normal day at school last Friday before heading to the 'Oh Yeah' Music Centre in Belfast, where they were to perform for some 'mystery guests' among others. The musically talented duo are no strangers to the busking scene in Northern Ireland, and got a phone call the night before asking if they would like to perform the following day. "We didn't know who they were going to be and we were just really excited," Molly told BBC News NI.

The surprise was revealed as Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody joined the audience during the girls' performance. The two were visiting Belfast for the launch of The Ed Sheeran Foundation, which supports school-aged children and teenagers with grants, to make studying or playing music more accessible.

When Molly realised who was in their midst, she said she wasn't even nervous. "It was just nice because they just stood there and smiled at us and were nodding their heads at us," she said. After the performance they had their Guitars signed by Sheeran and Lightbody, and chatted about the importance of music.

Sheeran visited a number of music organisations across Belfast on Friday including the 'Oh Yeah' Music Centre, (which was co-founded by Lightbody), Hotbox Entertainment, which works with young musicians and rappers from its studio in west Belfast and Drake Music NI, a charity which provides tutoring to differently abled people of all ages who want to be able to express themselves independently through music.

Molly and Ruby's mum Tracy said it was a dream come true for them. "[It] was just a normal school day ... picked them up straight after and got changed on the way - the life of a rock star." The last minute, surprise nature of the performance meant that the sisters only chose their song an hour beforehand! In the end they went with 'Stick Season' by popular US country singer Noah Kahan- who performed in Belfast last year and is due to headline Marlay Park, Dublin in July 2025. "We just chose Stick Season because we just love it," Molly said.

What they are busy preparing for in advance however is their slot at the Grand Opera House's Future Talent concert in Belfast next month. 'Future Talent 2025' aims to help young musicians from all across the Island of Ireland build confidence and focus - so that they can make the best of their musical journeys and fulfill their potential.
