New figures from the Central Statistics Office shows a significant rise in burglaries, thefts, and violent crime across the country.
The latest report on crime, covers the 12 months up to September last year, and highlights increases in several key offence categories, raising concerns about public safety and law enforcement resources.
According to the report, burglaries increased by 10%, with 878 additional incidents compared to the previous year. The number of thefts also rose by 7%, largely driven by shoplifting and other retail-related offences.
The data highlights an increase in violent crime, with a rise in kidnapping offences, weapons and explosives-related crimes, and public order offences. These figures suggest a growing challenge for Gardai in tackling serious criminal activity.
Despite these increases, the CSO data does point to some improvements in other areas. The number of homicides fell by 12%, with 75 recorded incidents, marking a positive shift in one of the most serious crime categories. Additionally, there was a decline in reported cases of sexual offences, extortion, hijacking, and drug-related crime.
