Sinn Féin has regained its position as the most popular political party, receiving 26% support in the latest political opinion poll.

An Irish Times/Ipsos poll shows voters have little enthusiasm for the new Government since they took office, which is helping Sinn Féin.

The largest opposition party has jumped six points to 26 per cent while Fine Gael has slumped three to 16 per cent.

On only one previous occasion, in February 1994, had Fine Gael been as low as 16 per cent in a such a poll.

Fine Gael is struggling to capture the interest of younger voters, with just 7 per cent support among the under 35s.

Fianna Fáil is at 22 per cent, the Social Democrats at 7 and Labour at 5.

Micheál Martin is the most popular leader holding a solid 45% satisfaction rating, an increase of one.

Simon Harris has ceded top spot in the popularity stakes, dropping four points to 42 per cent, while Mary Lou McDonald comes in third with 37 per cent, an increase of six points for the Sinn Féin leader.

Perhaps most notably, 64 per cent of voters said the Coalition was wrong to make an agreement with Independent TD Michael Lowry.

Only 39 per cent said they were satisfied with the Government while 51 per cent said they were dissatisfied.
