The project has become infamous for its massive cost overruns and persistent construction issues, now positioning it as the most expensive hospital globally.
At an Oireachtas Health Committee meeting, Minister Donnelly acknowledged that the targeted opening date of June 2025 is uncertain, depending on whether the remaining issues can be resolved in time.
A significant milestone, if met, would see the hospital begin commissioning, with 100,000 pieces of equipment to be installed and 4,000 staff transitioning to a fully digital, paperless operation.
However, a dispute between the government, contractor BAM, and the development board has worsened, with disagreements over responsibility for delays.
One notable incident involved BAM filing a €25 million claim for work on air conditioning grilles, a task that reportedly cost just €200,000, an error that Donnelly admitted may need further review.
The hospital remains a focal point of national controversy, as stakeholders continue to debate the causes of the project’s spiraling costs and delays.
