An inquest into the death of a 57-year-old woman who died at least six months before her body was discovered, heard her family made every effort to engage with her.

57-year-old Joyce O’Mahony was found at her home at Brookfield Lawn in Cork City in May 2024.  She moved back home from London in 2010 to look after her mother.

She became more reclusive, withdrawn and uncooperative and ignored what her family described as ‘countless attempts’ to reach her.

A neighbour working in pest control entered her home on the 21st of May last year with a crowbar due to a mouse infestation in a nearby home.

He discovered the mummified body of Joyce O’Mahony and an electric heater plugged in nearby.

Coroner Philip Comyn said she had entered a 'downward spiral,' which became worse when her mother died during the pandemic.

He extended his sympathy to the O’Mahony family and recorded an open verdict.

Joyce's family say she will be remembered as a ‘lively, intelligent and capable person,’ with an excellent sense of humour.
