Irish Citizens Urged to Leave Lebanon

Irish citizens in Lebanon are being strongly urged to leave the country amid fears of escalating violence in the region.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is encouraging more than 100 Irish nationals it's in contact with there to reassess their need to remain in the country.

It comes as Israel is bracing itself for an attack from Iran and Hezbollah as fears grow over a wider escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Junior Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Fleming says they should leave while they can:

'Our strong advice is to ask each of our citizens in the Lebanon to reassess their own situation because they're on the ground and to leave on commercial flights while they're still available. Sometimes these people are working non-government and charities. So people will make their own choice - but again I stress it's our strong advice that they review own situation with a view to leaving'
