Irish Olympians To Be Welcomed Home Today

The 133 athletes who represented Ireland at the games will take part in a special homecoming in Dublin city later to celebrate the country's biggest medal haul.

This event will take place at Dublin's GPO, with crowds expected to gather from 12.30pm, beggining around lunchtime. It is being organised by Dublin City Council.

Overall, 64 women and 69 men took part in the games, with seven medals won overall, including four gold medals across several events from the Paris games.

Three athletes retained Olympic titles from their exploits in Tokyo, including Kellie Harrington who won a gold medal in the 60kg boxing event, winning gold at her second consecutive Olympic games, becoming the second ever Irish athlete to do so.

Cork rowers Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won gold from the men's lightweight double sculls, retaining their gold medal from Tokyo. 

Elsewhere, swimmer Daniel Wiffen won gold in the men's 800m final, as well as winning bronze in the men's 1,500m final, while Rhys McCleneghan won gold in the pommel horse final. 

Other athletes who medalled at the Paris Olympics, include Sligo's Mona McSharry who won bronze in the 100m breaststroke, while there was also bronze medals for Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch in the rowing.

From 10.30 to 5pm today, O'Connell Street will be closed, with diversions put in place. All bus stops on O'Connell Street will be diverted from 10am.

There will be no Luas trams running between Smithfield and Connolly on the Red Line from 9.20am until 10pm tonight. 

Ahead of this homecoming, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, Minister for Sport Catherine Martin and Minister for Sport and Physical Education Thomas Byrne all paid tribute to Ireland's Olympic athletes.
