A new campaign gets underway in Dublin today, raising awareness of an “epidemic” of violence against women in Ireland.
The Women's Collective in Tallaght has organised the Red Shoes campaign, highlighting the number of women who have died violently in the state since 1996.
The art installation features 267 pairs of Red Shoes, each representing a victim of femicide.
Orla O'Connor from the National Women's Council said:
“I think it’s really important that the Women’s Collective are doing this.
“It’s important that we remember the women who have been murdered, and I think every death of every woman is such an enormous tragedy for their families and for their community.
“But it also points to the epidemic that we have of violence against women in Ireland.”
The Red Shoes installation will be on display at the South Dublin County Council Plaza.
“Our new government are negotiating a new programme for government. We’re looking at the next four years, we need to make sure that violence against women is a priority for this government,” Ms O’Connor said.
“Because it’s not acceptable that women cannot be safe in Ireland so we need to make it that priority.”
