The Leaving Cert exams in English may soon undergo a significant revamp.
According to The Irish Times, discussions are underway to consolidate the exam into a single written paper rather than the current two-paper format.
This change is part of a broader effort to alleviate stress for students during the exams.
If approved, these reforms could apply to students starting fifth year in September 2026. There is also a proposal to introduce a project component that would contribute up to 40% of the final grade, to be completed by the end of fifth year.
This shift could provide a more continuous assessment option, giving students an alternative to the traditional high-stakes exams.
Maths exams are also under review, though talks about similar changes are reportedly at an earlier stage.
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment is overseeing these potential reforms under guidance from the Education Minister.
While these changes aim to modernise the assessment process, they are expected to stir debate.
Teachers’ unions, including the Teachers Union of Ireland, have previously voiced concerns about senior cycle reforms, emphasizing that meaningful consultation with educators is essential to ensure any new approaches serve students effectively.
