Storm Eowyn has ripped through Ireland, leaving a record breaking 700,000 people without power.

A Status red alert in places like Cork, Limerick, Galway, Clare and Kerry has been downgraded to an orange alert for wind, while the rest of the country including Dublin, will be downgraded by lunchtime.

ESB Network crews will be dispatched around the country to attempt to bring supply back to as many homes and businesses as possible, but they say this could be into next week by the time that happens.

Customers are being advised to keep themselves updated with the latest developments at Powercheck.ie

Elsewhere in the country, fire and rescue services in many counties, along with county and city council personnel have been deployed to deal with fallen trees that have blocked roads, fallen onto cars and other property.

In Galway, the Connacht GAA dome has been completely destroyed by the winds. The west of the country experienced the worst of the wind, with a record broken for the strongest gust of wind in Galway.

Trees down have also been a big issue in Dublin, where also in Blanchardstown, the ice rink structure has been completely destroyed.

Cork City Council reported a partial wall collapse on the Lee Road, with motorists told to avoid the area.

Public transport services will remain suspended until red alerts expire. At that point services will only resume, once safety assessments have been carried out along various routes, and passengers are being told to experience major delays on the network.

In the country's airports, hundreds of flights have been cancelled into and out of them, including Dublin, Cork and Shannon. Intending passengers are being told to keep in regular contact with their airlines before setting out to the airport.
