A second man in his 30s has been arrested in relation to an assault on two off-duty gardaí in Dublin over the weekend.

The incident happened in the city centre in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two off-duty gardaí were taken to hospital following the assault. One, aged in his 30s, has since been discharged, while the other, in his 40s, remains in a critical condition.

A man in his 30s was arrested as part of the investigation on Saturday evening and remains in Garda custody today.

Another man, also aged in his 30s, is the second person to be arrested and is detained at a garda station in the Dublin region.

The attack on two Garda members in Dublin has drawn widespread condemnation. Justice Minister Helen McEntee called it "appalling," Micheál Martin described it as "brutal," and Simon Harris offered support to the injured Gardaí and their families.

GRA President Mark O'Meara shared thoughts and prayers for the Gardaí and their loved ones.

The assault underscores rising safety concerns in Dublin City Centre, particularly at night during the festive season. Councillor Donna Cooney has urged for more visible Garda patrols to ensure public safety in the lead-up to Christmas.
