30 years after its 1999 release, ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ is getting its very own Broadway musical led by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepson.
Dunham is set to co-write the production alongside playwright Jessica Huang. While Canadian popstar Jepson will co-write the score with Ethan Gruska, with whom she worked on her most recent album, 2023’s The Loveliest Time.
Directing the adaptation is the Tony-winning Christopher Wheeldon who recently worked on ‘Almost Famous: The Musical’.
Producer Mike Bosner has also joined the creative team, known for his work on ‘Shucked and Beautiful – The Carole King Musical to Broadway’.
The 1999 film was originally based on the Shakespeare play ‘The Taming of The Shrew’ and launched the careers of Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. Directed by Gil Junger, the iconic 90s romcom follows rebellious teen Kat Stratford as high school bad-boy Patrick Verona attempts to woo her despite her fathers strict rules.
Carly Rae Jepson is best known for her hit 2010’s tracks ‘Call Me Maybe’ and ‘Run Away With Me’, but she has been making a name for herself in theatre, playing the title role in the 2014 Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’, and Frenchy in Fox’s Emmy-winning ’Grease: Live’.
Dunham’s most recent series ‘Too Much’ is set to be released on Netflix later this year. The romcom stars Megan Stalter as Jessica, a New Yorker who moved to London for a fresh start after a breakup.
The writer is also working on a film about the disgraced crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, of FTX collapse fame as well as another romcom called ‘Good Sex’ starring Natalie Portman.
