English actress Aimee Lou Wood has criticised her depiction in a Saturday Night Live sketch calling it “mean and unfunny”.

The 31-year-old White Lotus actress took to her Instagram story to address the SNL sketch where cast member Sarah Sherman impersonated her, putting on an exaggerated English accent and wearing big prosthetic teeth. At one point, in a reference to the actress's teeth, Sherman says: "Fluoride? What's that?"

"the whole joke was about fluoride,"

Wood clarified that she was not “thin-skinned” and understood that the sketch was a “caricature”.

"But the whole joke was about fluoride," she wrote on Sunday. "I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth."

"The rest of the skit was punching up," Wood added, "and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on".

She made sure to clarify that she was not criticising Sherman but criticising the concept of the character instead.

Wood, who is also famous for her role in Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’, also shared a comment by an unnamed user describing the sketch as taking "a screeching turn into 1970s misogyny".

"This sums up my view," the actress commented.

"Yes, take the piss for sure...but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”

The actress has received an apology from SNL following her criticism.

Wood plays Chelsea in the third series of Mike White’s drama ‘The White Lotus’, which follows the lives of guests and staff at a luxury resort in Thailand.

The sketch, titled ‘White Potus’, imagined Donald Trump and his inner circle attending the famous resort, depicted by the iconic White Lotus characters.

“Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago.” Wood wrote in a later post. “ Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”

“On a positive note, everyone is agreeing with me about it so I’m glad I said something instead of going in on myself.” she added

Along with this, she positive messages from fans about her post, including one that read: “Don’t delete it. It was mean, and saying it out loud removes their power."

“You’re unreal in every way, I have a big gap in my teeth and an overbite and you’ve genuinely made me feel so much better about myself.” they wrote.

In an interview with GQ magazine last week, Wood spoke about the discourse surrounding her teeth saying she was “really happy that it's symbolising rebellion and freedom, but there's a limit,"

"I don't know if it was a man would we be talking about it this much?"

“I'm not getting to talk about my work". She explained.

She added "I don't know if it was a man would we be talking about it this much? It's still going on about a woman's appearance."
