Doherty's death was confirmed by her publicist Leslie Sloane, who told US publication, People: "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty".
"On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease", she continued. "The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie".
"The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace".
The actress who was renowned for starring in both roles, revealed that she was battling stage four cancer back in 2020, calling it a "bitter pill to swallow".
Shannen Doherty starred as Brenda Walsh in Fox's Beverly Hills, starting in 1990. She went on to star in the supernatural series Charmed, where she played three witches working together to fight evil.
She also featured in films including cult classics Heathers, romantic comedies like Girls Just Want to Have Fun, as well as comedies from filmmaker Kevin Smith Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Last year, Doherty set up a memoir podcast called 'Lets Be Clear', where she spoke about her ongoing experience with cancer, and her decades long career in Hollywood.
