Fair City star, Bryan Murray has announced his plans to retire from the show after 20 years, following his Alzheimer's diagnosis.
The actor, known for playing Bob Charles on the RTÉ soap, was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019, however, he continued to work on the soap in that time, before going public with his diagnosis in 2022.
Murray will make his final Fair City appearance on April 24.
This was confirmed by a statement from the show's producers.
"Bryan took on the role of Charles, a man whose complex relationships and gripping storylines captured the attention of viewers across the country", they said. "Over the years, his portrayal of Bob has been a cornerstone of the show, delivering unforgettable moments".
"Bob Charles’ dynamic evolution - from family man to navigating intense emotional challenges - showcased Mr Murray’s exceptional range as an actor".
Paying tribute to the retiring Bryan Murray, Fair City executive producer, Brigie De Courcy had this to say.
"Bryan has been a part of the Fair City family for 20 years. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching him navigate a wide range of emotions and storylines, always with a professionalism that made it look effortless", de Courcy said. "His immense talent, dedication, and passion for his craft have left an enduring legacy that will be remembered. While we will miss him on set, we are incredibly grateful for the many wonderful years we’ve shared with him.
"His contribution to Irish television is immeasurable, and we wish him all the best".
During his time in Carrigstown, Bryan Murray's character managed McCoy's Pub, before buying the local café, The Hungary Pig, and was considered an important figure in the community, often involved in philanthropic work.
He also met his on and off screen partner, Una Crawford O'Brien on the soap. The characters eventually married, after having an affair.
Bryan Murray is also credited with roles in RTÉ's adaption of Strumpet City, Channel Four show, Brookside, as well as RTÉ comedy/drama The Irish R.M. He also made a brief appearance on British police drama, The Bill.
