Goodyear was best known for her role as barmaid Bet Lynch in the long running soap for over two decades.

News regarding her diagnosis was confirmed by her husband Scott Brand, who released this statement.

"My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heart-breaking diagnosis", the statement read. "Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering forgetfulness for some time and we have been seeking medical advice and assistance, but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation – and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse".

"We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out", he added. "Inevitably she is recognised, and fans love to meet her – and she them – but she can get confused particularly if she is tired. I hope people will understand".

Having been a staple on the soap for more than 20 years, Goodyear left the cobbles in 1995, before making a series of brief appearances in 2002 and 2003.

Along with appearing on Celebrity Big Brother, Goodyear also featured on Come Dine With Me, Celebrity Fit Club, as well as a celebrity special of Stars In Their Eyes.

Julie Goodyear remains a patron of Willow Wood Hospice in Greater Manchester.
