Day-Lewis who previously starred in the Scorsese-directed The Age Of Innocence (1993), and Gangs of New York (2002), was spotted at the National Board of Review Awards Gala, honouring Scorsese with the accolade for Best Director.

At the ceremony, which took place at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, Day-Lewis lauded Scorsese for his vision and effort to create such "enthralling" films.

“Martin's work — with the light of his own making — he illuminated unknown worlds that pulsed with the dangerous, irresistible energy, worlds that were mysterious to me and utterly enthralling", Day-Lewis said.

The retired actor continued, "He illuminated the vast beautiful landscape of what is possible in film, and he clarified for me what it is that one must ask of oneself, to work in faith".

Concluding his speech, Day-Lewis touched on his close relationship with Martin Scorsese, which he described as an "unexpected privilege".

"I'm grateful to the National Board of Review for so justly recognizing the supreme, inimitable artistry of this mighty man. To every person that works in the crucible of the imagination, he's a living treasure. As a man and as a filmmaker, I love and revere him. For his devastating telling of the story of the Killers of the Flower Moon, best director award goes to Martin Scorsese".

After handing the award, Daniel Day-Lewis took photos with Scorsese on the red carpet, with The Wolfe Of Wall Street director beaming with his award in hand.

Daniel Day-Lewis has been rarely seen in the public eye, having retired from acting in 2017.
