Ed Sheeran Becomes The UK's Most Played Artist For Sixth Time In Eight Years

Sheeran was once again named the most played artist by the music licensing company PPL, who revealed their Most Played charts for 2022. 

PPL are a company which regulates the use of of recorded music on TV and radio. Using information ascertained from airplay reports by broadcasters and public performance venues, PPL ensure that performers and rightsholders are paid when their music is used.

Ed Sheeran's latest success means that he is the most played artist in the UK for six out of the last eight years, a dominance which started in 2015, having first appeared in the top 5 in 2012. His 2022 triumph illustrates the popularity of his 2021 album '=', along with his back catalogue.

Reacting to the news, Sheeran wrote, "Thanks to everyone who continues to listen to and enjoy my music. I never take it for granted x". 

Overall, UK artists continue to dominate the airplay chart, including Dua Lipa, Elton John, George Ezra, Becky Hill, Calvin Harris among others. US singer Taylor Swift also features.

Coldplay appear to be the only name that comes close to matching Ed Sheeran's musical superiority, having made the top 10 for the tenth year in a row.
