This comes after Schofield left the ITV show This Morning after the host admitted to an affair with a younger male colleague, which he lied about for years. Schofield described the relationship as "unwise, but not illegal".
However, music icon Elton John has spoken up for Schofield, alleging that the subsequent media scruitiny faced by the 61 year old would not have been as strong, if the relationship was heterosexual, with a similar age gap.
"I feel that the Philip Schofield thing has been totally homophobic", Elton John said in a recent interview. "If it was a straight guy in a fling with a young woman, it wouldn't even make the papers".
Following Schofield's departure, an external review of ITV was carried out, with bosses and broadcasters asked to give evidence in parliament, amid allegations of a "toxic" workplace.
