The music legend cited the social media site's policy allowing “misinformation to flourish unchecked” as his reasons for leaving the site.
Following Elon Musk's purchase of of Twitter last October, there has been a noticeable spike in hate speeches reported on the platform.
Announcing this news via his Twitter account, Elton John said,“All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world".
The Candle in the Wind singer also added, “I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked".
Elton John is the latest in a list of household stars who have left the social media platform, including actor Jim Carrey, Jack White and Trent Reznor, with the latter labelling the new owner of Twitter "an embarrassment".
