By way of apologising, Kauffman has pledged $4million to African American studies. This pledge was made to Kauffman's alma mater Brandeis University in Boston, to establish a proffessorship in the school's African and American studies department.
“I’ve learned a lot in the last 20 years", Kauffman told the Los Angeles Times. “Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. It’s painful looking at yourself in the mirror. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know better 25 years ago".
“It took me a long time to begin to understand how I internalised systemic racism. I’ve been working really hard to become an ally, an anti-racist", she continued. "And this seemed to me to be a way that I could participate in the conversation from a white woman’s perspective".
Marta Kauffman had revealed that that tragic death of George Floyd in 2020, has made her re evaluate issues such as criticism that the show may heve received over its lack of diversity.
