Hollywood actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead at their home in New Mexico, US.
This was confirmed by the Santa Fe County Sheriff, who said that they are currently carrying out an active investigation. However, they do not believe that either death was caused by foul play at this time.
"On February 26 2025 at approximately 1.45pm, Santa Fe County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, and a dog were found deceased", a police statement read.
"Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time – however, exact cause of death has not been determined. This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office".
Gene Hackman, who retired from acting in 2004, is considered one of the all time great actors in screen history. He celebrated his 95th birthday back in January.
Hackman's career saw him win two Academy Awards, with his maiden Oscar arriving in 1972, for Best Actor, winning the accolade for his role as detective Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle, in William Friedkin's The French Connection. This role also saw Hackman win BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for Best Actor. He also won best actor for his role in The Poseidon Adventure in 1972.
He also won BAFTA awards in the best supporting actor category for Unforgiven and The French Connection.
In 1993, Hackman won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as 'Little' Bill Dagget, in the western, Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood.
