Est. Reading: 2 minutes

This comes after it had been reported that sculptor Laura Lian had discussed the project with Andros Georgiou who was Michael's best friend, at the memorial site last weekend.

This motion was approved despite strong "resistance" from the area's 3,200 residents, with parish councillor Catherine Hall saying this when the application was originally submitted five years ago. “I’m reluctant to even agree in principle because we risk stirring up a hornets’ nest".

People who objected to this motion included wealthy, retired people.

These plans which were originally made by the late Wham! singer's estate with the local council in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire back in 2018, have now been approved.

“Everyone is thrilled to finally have the go ahead. Work starts soon. Laura was introduced to George’s estate by a friend and they loved her previous work, including figures of David Bowie and John Lennon", a source has also added. "Everyone is looking forward to one day being able to unveil the statue in Goring. George lived a quiet life there for 17 years and loved it".

George Michael who passed away in December 2016 at his cottage in Goring-on-Thames, burst onto the music scene as one half of popular 1980s pop duo Wham!, alongside school friend Andrew Ridgeley.

Speaking previously, Ridgeley had given a big thumbs up to a memorial being built in his friend's honour.

‘I think there’s a very good case for that", Ridgeley had said.

Last month, Elton John who duetted with Michael on his track 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down', paid a moving tribute to the singer with a live cover of the track at Glastonbury.
