The Australian actor and singer, who finished in third place in 'The X Factor' in Australia in 2011, before joining the cast of Home and Away 2 years later, has died after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Ruffo was diagnosed with the disease in 2017, starting an "aggressive treatment", before revealing that he was in remission 2 years later.

In November 2020, Ruffo confirmed that the cancer had returned, revealing two years later that it was terminal, releasing his memoir 'No Finish Line' in the same month.

Ruffo's death was confirmed via a statement shared on his Instagram account.

"It is with a heavy heart that today we had to farewell our beloved Johnny", a statement read. "Surrounded by his partner Tahnee and family, Johnny went peacefully with the support of some incredible nurses and doctors".

"Johnny was very determined and had a strong will," the statement continued. "He battled all the way to the end and fought as hard as he could".

Adding, "Such a beautiful soul with so much more to give. We all love you Johnny and will remember you for all the joy you brought to our lives. Rest easy".

Along with his exploits on The X Factor, Ruffo also appeared on the Australian version of Dancing With The Stars, winning the competition with professional partner Luda Kroitor.

He subsequently landed the role of Chris Harrington on popular show Home and Away in 2013, remaining on the set for 3 years.

Among those to pay tribute to Johnny Ruffo were Spice Girls singer Melanie Brown, a judge on Australia's, The Masked Singer.

"My heart just broke," she commented on Instagram, before adding: "Sending my sincere condolences".

Penny McNamee who starred alongside Ruffo on Home and Away, added, "Oh Johnny. He was the first cast member I ever met on @homeandaway and he was instantly warm, funny and self-deprecating".

"What joy he brought to the world. Sending all my love to Tahnee, and all Johnny’s family and friends".

Elsewhere, Danii Minogue called Ruffo "the cheekiest chap".

The Masked Singer's Dave Hughes also wrote "A (star emoji) has moved to the next world. Go well Johnny".
