Jamie Foxx has shared details of his near-death experience that he suffered last year in a new Netflix comedy, which was released this week.

The actor and comedian's show, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was, which arrived on Tuesday, saw him open up about his "mystery" illness, which he said was a "a brain bleed that led to a stroke".

This special began when Jamie's daughter, Corinne Foxx welcomed her father to the stage, saying that "This is a special moment for me and my family. It is a blessing to even be here".

In the show, Foxx described his illness as a "mystery", adding that "we still don't know exactly what happened to me".

As he moves onto the stage, Foxx also added: "you have no idea how good it feels, Atlanta", as he was "fighting" for his life to recover.

The Any Given Sunday star revealed that he was rushed to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, after falling ill with what began as a "bad headache", before receiving a "cortisone shot" from his doctor.

He said that his sister Deidra Dixon realised "something was wrong", as she noticed her brother appearing lethargic as she took him to the hospital.

"She didn't know anything about Piedmont Hospital, but she had a hunch that some angels were in there", Foxx revealed. "Atlanta saved my life".

"brain bleed"

It was at this point that Jamie Foxx revealed that the doctor told his sister that he was "having a brain bleed that led to a stroke".

"You don't dream that something would go wrong, but when something does go wrong, you need a sister", said Foxx, who added that the doctor also informed Deirdra that "if I don't go in his head right now, we're going to lose him".

"My sister knelt down outside the operating room and prayed the whole time", he continued. "Your life doesn't flash before your face".

"It was kind of oddly peaceful. I say this all the time; 'I saw the tunnel. I didn't see the light. I was in that tunnel, though'. It was hot in that tunnel".

Speaking to the audience, Foxx also joked that he wondered if he "going to the wrong place".

While he said that the medical staff  "didn't find" the cause of the brain bleed, he was still diagnosed with a stroke.

While the doctor stated that he would recover from this, it would probably "be the worst year of his life".

Foxx outlined the difficulties he experienced, including his head shaking, and being unable to walk properly.

"Twenty days I don't remember, but on May 4 I woke up", Foxx explained. "When I woke up, I found myself in a wheelchair. I couldn't walk".

He also revealed that he found it difficult to come to terms with his condition, saying that it left him "down in the dumps" at one stage.

Foxx also mentioned that he was helped by a psychiatrist, who enabled him to rediscover his relationship with God, adding: "If I can stay funny, I can stay alive".

Jamie Foxx is to star alongside the returning Cameron Diaz in a new Netflix spy thriller, 'Back In Action'. More on this here.
